The Siddheshwar temple is old age Shiva temple believed to be built on Pravara river bank during Shilahaar Family ruling in Maharashtra about 5th Century AD. The Siddheshwar temple is unique in that way it was buried till 1780 AD. North and south of the west sabhamandapa are small open mandapas. Both side (East & West) Doorframe carving of Sanctum is astonishing but Nandi is placed in East mandapa . In Maharashtra sculpture of camels in temple can be found very rarely. It is here, it’s special.
This Siddheshwar temple was buried till last century under the deposits of Pravara river and was excavated and cleaned. One of the mukhmandpa is reconstructed then as can be gleaned from the typical later Peshwa period cusp-ed arches and stocky cypress pillars. Rest of the temple is quite intact in terms of architecture. The other two mukhmandapas are closed. This is a rare temple where floor is made of cow dung ! The temple has one entrance to the river side and one towards land. This is very much in league with Temples of Amruteshwar Ratangad where entrance to Gabhara is from both sides. Temple faces east west. The pillars are beautifully and intricately decorated and pillar bases carry figures of Gods and Goddesses. The external niches to the north and south have mutated images of Chamunda and Nataraja. This temple along with several remains along Banks of Pravara like Agasti ashram form important Historical heritage of Akole town.
